SCR Catalyst Cleaning

Give Your Diesel Engine the Care It Needs with SCR Catalyst Cleaning and Washing from the Team at Western Filters

When something goes wrong with a diesel engine, the first instinct is often to start replacing problematic components. Certainly, replacing something like a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst can sometimes solve the problem with your engine and get it back up and running again. However, the fact is that replacing these components can be extremely expensive—sometimes costing thousands and thousands of dollars. At Western Filters, our team can help save that money by trying another method first: DPF or SCR cleaning.

Repairing Your SCR Catalyst System

SCRs are intended to take in NOx (oxides of nitrogen, usually in the form of atmospheric pollutants) and convert them into their harmless root components (water vapour and nitrogen gas). The SCR catalyst serves the role of catalysing a reaction with the NOx emissions from your diesel engine. This reaction creates the aforementioned water vapour and nitrogen gas. Not only do SCRs reduce the emissions of your diesel vehicle, but they also help to improve fuel efficiency and economy.

The good news is that SCRs typically require little to no ongoing care or maintenance. Once in place, they should do their jobs without much interference from you. In some cases, the filter will need to be dosed with the chemical reactant it uses to catalyse the reaction with the NOx emissions. Otherwise, though, the SCR catalyst actually requires less frequent cleaning or maintenance than other diesel engine filters, including the DPF.

In some cases, though, it is possible for the SCR to become clogged. As mentioned above, the filter needs to be dosed with a chemical reactant—usually either urea or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to formulate chemical reactions successfully. Especially in the case of DEF, these substances can harden over time, clogging the filter and impairing its ability to catalyse reactions with NOx emissions. In these cases, diesel engines will start producing more harmful, smelly emissions and will also decline in terms of fuel economy.

A clogged SCR, in other words, is a pretty big problem. Fortunately, our team at Western Filters is qualified to provide SCR catalyst cleaning. If you believe your diesel engine requires either SCR cleaning or SCR replacement, we urge you to call us before you do anything else. The last thing you want is to purchase a new SCR if your existing catalyst can be salvaged, or if the problem is actually being caused by another part of your engine. Replacing any filter should be a last resort, and by providing thorough inspections of your filters, we can determine whether that step is necessary. For SCR catalyst washing (and our other filter cleaning services), we have a success rate of 95 percent. In other words, we can usually clean your filters and return them to effective service, meaning that no replacement is necessary.
